The Swedish healthcare payer system is highly decentralized, with 21 self-governed County Councils, each with its own administrative set up for management of drug procurement, use and cost control. Having a drug included in the national reimbursement scheme is only the first step in achieving full access to the Swedish market.
The national regulatory framework for promoting medicinal products in Sweden is largely based on EU legislation. For example, it’s prohibited to advertise medicinal products that are not authorized for sale in Sweden or to target children when advertising medicinal products. Advertising prescription medicinal products to the general public is also prohibited, with the exception of vaccination campaigns against human infectious diseases.
